I have long been attracted to the sweep and majesty of fabric depicted in Classic
Greek and particularly Renaissance sculpture. Though primarily trained as a
photographer, my first love was the canvas. Recently, I began to play more
seriously with various shapes, forms, and colors in my studio; embarking on a
journey that ultimately reframed my ideas and ambitions about sculpture. Paper
proved to have the greatest potential in that its flexible but can become quite
rigid—and of course is cheap. Enjoying the immediacy as well as the frustrations
of working with recycled and discarded materials, I massaged and embedded
them in a suspensions of gesso, acrylic paints, and other mediums and
adherents. The resulting works have a three-dimensional quality that intrigues
and invites the viewer to become engaged in a conversation that can be just as
multi-layered or as subdued as the work itself.
